Shrines of Baramulla

Gosani Teng Shrine

A Sacred Hill Where Mythology Flows Through Living Waters

Rising above the old town of Baramulla, Gosani Teng is a sacred hill shrine where spirituality, mythology, and nature come together in a deeply powerful way. Known for its holy kunds such as Ram Kund and Sita Kund, this site has been revered for centuries as a place of divine presence and spiritual purification.

Unlike many temples built solely as structures, Gosani Teng is a living sacred landscapewhere every stone, every spring, and every path carries a story.

A Sacred Legacy Rooted in the Timeless Traditions of the Ramayana

Historical & Mythological Significance

Gosani Teng is deeply rooted in Ramayana traditions, making it one of the most spiritually significant sites in Baramulla.

According to local belief:

• Lord Ram performed a sacred Yagna at this very location
• The hill became a center of spiritual energy, attracting saints and seekers
• The presence of multiple kunds is linked to divine intervention during this sacred event

Over time, the site evolved into a revered pilgrimage destination, forming an important part of Baramulla’s spiritual heritage.

Sacred Waters That Embody Divine Virtues and Spiritual Purity

The Sacred Kunds

At the heart of Gosani Teng lies a cluster of holy water bodies, each carrying its own spiritual meaning:

  • Ram Kund –  associated with righteousness and divine leadership
  • Sita Kund – symbolizing purity, devotion, and grace
  • Lakshman Kund and others – representing duty, protection, and service

These kunds were traditionally used for ritual bathing and spiritual cleansing, and are believed to be the source of the sacred waters that flow into Gupt Ganga (Gangnoor) below.

A Sacred Ascent Where Nature Leads to Spiritual Elevation

The Setting & Spiritual Atmosphere

The location of Gosani Teng enhances its sacredness:

• Positioned on a hilltop overlooking Baramulla, offering serenity and solitude
• Surrounded by natural beauty, orchards, and open landscape
• Historically included a temple complex and Dharamshala, making it a complete spiritual center

The journey up the hill itself becomes part of the experience – symbolizing a path towards spiritual elevation.

A Sacred Site Affected by Time, Yet Alive in Spirit

Destruction & Present Condition

Like many heritage sites in the region, Gosani Teng has faced significant setbacks:

  • The temple structures and Dharamshala were burnt during the unrest of the early 1990s
  • The orchard land associated with the shrine has been encroached upon
  • Infrastructure has deteriorated, leaving the site in a fragile state

Today, while the physical structures have weakened, the spiritual essence of the place remains untouched.

Where Faith Transcends Structures and Lives in Nature

A Symbol of Faith Beyond Structures

Gosani Teng stands as a reminder that spirituality is not confined to buildings.

Even in its current condition, the site continues to:

  • Attract devotees and visitors
  • Preserve its connection to Ramayana traditions
  • Offer a space for reflection, silence, and inner peace

It is a place where nature itself becomes the temple.
