Shrines of Baramulla
Preserving the Sacred Legacy of Kashmir
Baramulla, one of the oldest towns of Kashmir, has been a spiritual and cultural epicenter since ancient times. Nestled along the banks of the sacred Vitasta (Jhelum River), this region is home to several ancient temples, sacred springs, and pilgrimage sites deeply rooted in Sanatan Dharma.
These shrines are not merely places of worship – they are living testimonies of faith, resilience, and heritage, carrying forward centuries of devotion, mythology, and cultural identity of the Kashmiri Pandit community.
The Spiritual Heart of Baramulla’s Heritage
Introduction
A Living Shrine of Faith & Identity
Nestled along the sacred banks of the Vitasta (Jhelum River), the Mata Shailputri Temple – revered as Devibal – stands as one of the most ancient and spiritually significant shrines of Baramulla.
For generations, Devibal has not just been a place of worship – it has been the spiritual identity of the Kashmiri Pandit community, a place where faith, memory, and belonging come together. Even today, for many, it represents a connection to their roots, their traditions, and their sense of home.
A Timeless Legacy Rooted in Faith and Ancient Traditions
Historical & Mythological Significance
Devibal is believed to be over a thousand years old, making it one of the oldest living shrines in the region.
According to tradition:
- The temple flourished during the time of King Ashoka, reflecting the deep presence of Sanatan Dharma in ancient Kashmir
- Another account attributes its establishment to Maharani Narinder Prabha (7th century CE)
- The shrine is dedicated to Mata Shailputri, the first form of Goddess Durga, worshipped as the embodiment of strength, purity, and divine feminine energy
Over centuries, Devibal has witnessed the changing tides of history – yet its spiritual presence has remained constant.
Where Nature and Divinity Exist in Perfect Harmony
The Sacred Setting
What makes Devibal truly special is not just the temple itself, but the divine environment that surrounds it.
- The shrine is embraced by four majestic chinar trees, standing like silent guardians of time
- At its heart lies the sacred Amrit Kund, a natural spring whose waters are believed to carry healing and purity
- The marble sanctum houses the deity, radiating calm and spiritual energy
This harmonious blend of nature and devotion creates a space where visitors often feel a deep sense of peace and connection.
A Living Center of Faith, Celebration, and Spiritual Connection
Spiritual & Cultural Importance
Devibal holds a central place in the religious life of the community:
- Mata Shailputri is worshipped on the first day of Navratri, marking the beginning of the sacred festival
- The temple becomes a hub of prayers, havans, and spiritual gatherings during auspicious occasions
- It has historically been a place where families came together to celebrate faith and tradition
For many devotees, a visit to Devibal is not just a ritual – it is a deeply personal spiritual experience.
Enduring Through Adversity with Unshaken Faith
Trials, Destruction & Resilience
Like many sacred sites in the region, Devibal has endured significant challenges:
- The temple and its Dharamshala were burnt during the unrest of October 1990
- The structure suffered damage due to the 2007 earthquake
- In 2015, a landslide and ground sinking severely affected the temple complex, further impacting its condition
Despite these hardships, Devibal continues to stand – a powerful symbol of resilience, faith, and continuity.
Preserving Heritage Through Devotion
A Living Symbol of Faith
Even in its present condition, Devibal remains alive in the hearts of devotees.
It represents:
- The spiritual anchor of Baramulla’s Hindu community
- A connection between past, present, and future generations
- A place where faith has survived beyond physical destruction
The temple’s presence reminds us that while structures may fall, belief endures.
